The U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics defines a school psychologist as follows:

School psychologists work with students in early childhood and elementary and secondary schools.  They collaborate with teachers, parents, and school personnel to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments for all students.  School psychologists address student's learning and behavioral problems, suggest improvements to classroom management strategies or parenting techniques, and evaluate students suspected of having disabilities to help determine the best way to educate them.
They improve teaching, learning, and socialization strategies based on their understanding of the psychology of learning environments.  They also may evaluate the effectiveness of academic programs, prevention programs, behavior management procedures, and other services provided in the school setting.

Mrs. Maryann Scanlon is the school psychologist for grades five through eight.  Her office is in the Wellness Suite in the Lincoln Orens Middle School, room 120.  She is a member of the Island Park Committee on Special Education as well as Committee on Preschool Special Education.  She has been appointed by the Island Park Board of Education as alternate Chairperson of the Committee on Special Education and Committee on Preschool Special Education.  In addition to her responsibilities within Lincoln Orens Middle School, she serves as in-district case manager for resident students of Island Park who receive special education services in programs outside of the Island Park District, where such programs have been recommended by the district's Committee on Special Education.
